Revanalyticx user guide

Everything from installing the add-in to exporting a signed-off deviation report. Written for the person who has a scan linked in Revit and needs answers before the site meeting.

01Overview

Revanalyticx is an add-in for Autodesk Revit that compares linked point clouds against the elements in your model and tells you, surface by surface, how far apart they are — then helps you record, classify, coordinate and report what it found. It lives in its own Revanalyticx 4.1 tab on the ribbon and never needs you to leave Revit or export anything first.

A typical session looks like this:

  1. Link the scan (.rcp / .rcs) as you normally would, then colour it from the Point Clouds panel so you can read it.
  2. Select the elements you care about and run Model vs Point Cloud. Lay a Gridded Inspection on any face that needs numbers rather than colours.
  3. Inspect or Hover Probe anything that looks off, record it with Annotate, check Statistics for the pass rate, then Export PDF.

03Installation

You will receive a signed installer, Revanalyticx4.1.exe, together with your activation key. The installer looks for every supported Revit release on the machine and registers the add-in for each one it finds.

Using the installer

  1. Close Revit.
  2. Run Revanalyticx4.1.exe. If Windows SmartScreen appears, choose More info › Run anyway.
  3. Finish the wizard. It installs for your Windows user only — no administrator rights needed.
  4. Start Revit. The first time, Revit asks whether to load the add-in — choose Always Load.
  5. Look for the Revanalyticx 4.1 tab at the right-hand end of the ribbon.

Updating or removing

To update, simply run the newer installer over the existing one — your licence and settings are kept. To remove the add-in, use Windows Settings › Apps › Revanalyticx 4.1 for Revit › Uninstall; it removes itself from every Revit release it was installed into.

Several Revit versions on one machine? One installer covers all of them — you will see the Revanalyticx 4.1 tab in each supported release.

04First launch & licence

Revanalyticx needs an activation key before it will run. Until one is entered, pressing any analysis command opens the activation window instead — paste the key there and the command carries on.

  1. Open any project and go to the Revanalyticx 4.1 tab.
  2. On the Revanalyticx panel at the far right, click License.
  3. Paste the key from your email and click Activate. The window shows how long the licence has left.

The licence is re-checked in the background from time to time. If you are offline the plugin keeps working through a grace period, so a site visit without Wi-Fi does not stop you.

Two more buttons live nearby and are easy to mix up:

SettingsOn the Point Clouds panel. The fixed colour, the alternate mode used by Color Toggle, and the button that installs the default keyboard shortcuts.
OptionsOn the Revanalyticx panel. Where reports are written and what goes in them — see Export PDF & Options.
Tip. Open Help (Help & Info panel) for a list of every button with its full description and default shortcut. The list is generated from the ribbon itself, so it is always current.

05Point Clouds panel

These commands change how Revit draws the point clouds in the active view. Nothing here changes the data, and everything can be undone by pressing the button again or by Ctrl+Z.

Show / HideToggles Visibility/Graphics › Point Clouds › Visibility for the active view. Press again to bring them back.
Color ToggleFlips the colour mode between RGB (No Override) and whichever alternate mode you last used. Choose the default alternate in Settings.
RGBThe cloud in its own scanned colours — Revit's "No Override". Best for identifying what things are.
NormalsColours each point by the direction its surface faces. Walls, floors and ceilings separate cleanly when RGB is noisy.
IntensityColours each point by the scanner's returned signal strength. Good for scans taken in the dark or through dust.
ElevationColours each point by height. Slabs jump out; sagging or sloped surfaces become obvious.
Fixed ColorPaints the whole cloud in one colour, chosen in Settings — so the analysis colours are the only colours on screen.
SettingsThe fixed colour, the toggle's alternate mode, and install default keyboard shortcuts.
Note. The five colour modes are separate buttons on purpose: each gets its own row in Revit's Keyboard Shortcuts dialog, so each can be bound to its own key.

06Model vs Point Cloud

This is the core check. It samples the surfaces of the elements you choose, measures every sample against the nearest scan data, and colours the model by how far apart they are.

  1. Select the elements to check — walls, floors, columns, structural framing, ducts and pipes are all supported.
  2. Click Analysis › Model vs Point Cloud.
  3. Set the tolerance bands and their colours, the sampling density (how many points per surface) and the search distance (how far from the surface to look for scan points — 50 mm is a sensible start).
  4. Click OK. The heat map is drawn over the elements in the active view.

Reading the result

  • Colours follow the bands you set — a negative value means the scan sits inside the modelled surface, a positive one outside.
  • No Data marks areas the scan never covered. It is shown as its own state rather than as a deviation, so a wall behind a pallet does not look like a failure.
  • The heat map is a visualisation layer over the model. Drawing it or clearing it never alters an element.

The results are cached with the view. Inspect, Hover Probe, Statistics and Export PDF all read that cache, so nothing is measured twice and every number agrees with the colours on screen. Use Annotations › Clear to take the heat map off the view.

07Gridded Inspection & Annotate Grid Points

Where Model vs Point Cloud tells you whether a face is out, Gridded Inspection tells you where, with exact, regularly spaced QA/QC points that the site team can find again.

  1. Run Model vs Point Cloud first — Gridded Inspection works on an analysed face.
  2. Click Analysis › Gridded Inspection and select one planar face.
  3. Align a local U/V grid in project length units (500 mm is typical for floors, 1 m for façades) and preview the surface-clipped intersections. Openings are skipped automatically.
  4. Calculate. Every valid point gets XYZ, 3D, signed and normal deviation; points without scan coverage stay No Data. The complete point table exports to CSV.

Annotate Grid Points

Labels the points a Gridded Inspection has already measured — nothing is measured again. Click one point, click several, drag a selection window, or annotate every point in the current element, the selected elements, the active view or the whole inspection. Each label keeps the point's own ID and its stored surface deviation — optionally X, Y, Z and the coordinate — with a leader to the exact point and automatic offsets that avoid other labels. A density and tolerance filter keeps dense grids readable, and existing ID labels are extended rather than duplicated.

Floor flatness. A 300 mm grid on a slab top plus the CSV export gives you the numbers most FF/FL-style reports ask for.

08Statistics

Histogram, cumulative compliance and QA/QC verdicts from the cached deviation results — both Model vs Point Cloud and Gridded Inspection samples — without measuring geometry again.

  • Point- or area-weighted histograms, cumulative percentage and tolerance compliance.
  • PASS / FAIL against your tolerance, per element and per grid.
  • Select a bar to highlight where those values sit in the model.
  • Place a printable Revit legend in the view for the drawing set.
  • Export the detailed table and a summary to CSV.

09Inspect & Hover Probe

Two ways to read a number off the heat map. Both read the stored analysis and never re-measure, so what you read always matches what you see.

InspectClick anywhere on an analysed element to see its deviation there, split into X, Y and Z, with the 3D and out-of-plane distances, the model and scan positions, and the statistics for the whole element. Keeps probing until Esc, and can turn any reading into a numbered annotation.
Hover ProbeShows the deviation under the pointer as you move, in a panel that stays out of the way. Nothing is created. Press the button again to stop.

10Annotations panel

Annotations are how findings leave Revanalyticx and reach the people who fix things. They are stored in the model, so they survive saving and go to whoever reviews it next.

AnnotateRecords the reading at each point you click as a numbered annotation — P-001, P-002 — with its full comparison vector, and labels it in the view where Revit allows text.
AnnotationsEvery deviation annotation in the model, with XYZ deviations, tolerance band and status. Zoom to any of them, set a status, add a note, show the model-to-scan vectors, and export to CSV or a printable report. Works without a current analysis.
ClearTakes the heat map off the active view. The model itself is never altered by drawing or clearing it.

11Object Classify

Assigns BIM classification data across the model from a rule table you keep: Assembly Code (Uniformat), OmniClass number and title, a Mark numbered per category, Comments, workset, phase, and a project or shared parameter of your own.

  • Shows exactly what would change before anything is written — including which writes land on a type and so reach every instance of it.
  • Fills blanks without touching what is already there, unless you say otherwise.
  • Exports the run as CSV. One Ctrl+Z undoes the lot.

12BIM: family type names

Two checks that read and, when you approve, rewrite the model's own naming. Neither ever deletes, merges or overwrites: names that already exist are reported as conflicts.

Duplicate Name CheckerScans loaded families for Revit-style duplicates such as Door 2, Door 3 and Door 4 and proposes dimension-based names. Choose any combination of Width, Height and Depth, millimetres or inches, rounding and parameter mapping; review every suggestion, then apply them in one undoable rename transaction.
Name CheckerWorks out what each loaded Family Type should be called from its actual Width, Height and Depth and the convention you choose — 900 x 2100, W900 x H2100, 36" x 84" or a custom {Width} x {Height} template — and reports every type whose name says otherwise. Show finds the placed instances, Rename Selected applies the reviewed names, Export Report writes the lot to Excel.

13Clash Detection

Finds where any two physical elements occupy the same space. The engine reads geometry rather than categories, so walls against walls, walls against casework, beams against ducts, pipes against pipes and the host model against a linked model all work the same way.

  1. Click Coordination › Clash Detection.
  2. Choose set A and set B — by category, by the current selection or by picking. Categories can be ticked from this model and from any loaded link.
  3. Set a tolerance in the project's own units and decide whether elements that merely touch should count.
  4. Run. Every clash gets a permanent id. Show takes you straight to it in a reusable 3D view with a fitted section box and both elements coloured.
  5. Add a status and a comment, step through with Previous and Next, and re-run later to see what has been fixed.

The results export to Excel with element ids, unique ids, levels, worksets, model names and coordinates — enough for another team to find each clash without the model open.

14Export PDF & Options

Export PDFWrites the Model vs Point Cloud analysis stored for the active view as a PDF: the rendered Revit view with the heat map on it, then the tolerance legend, the run statistics and a row for every element measured. Nothing is measured again, so the report always agrees with the colours on screen.
OptionsThe report folder, whether the coloured view leads the PDF, whether CSV and HTML are written beside it, and whether the PDF opens as soon as it is written.

Other exports live with their own tools: CSV from Gridded Inspection, Statistics, the Annotations window and Object Classify; a printable report from the Annotations window; Excel from Name Checker and Clash Detection.

15Keyboard shortcuts

Every command has a default shortcut. They are digit pairs because Revit's own shortcuts are almost all letters, so they do not collide. Install them once from Point Clouds › Settings; after that they are ordinary Revit shortcuts you can change in View › User Interface › Keyboard Shortcuts.

16Troubleshooting

The Revanalyticx 4.1 tab is missing

  • Make sure Revit was closed while the installer ran; if not, close Revit and run the installer again.
  • If Revit asked about loading the add-in at start-up and you chose Do Not Load, run the installer again and choose Always Load next time.
  • Check that the Revit release you opened is one the plugin supports (2022 – 2026).
  • If Revit showed a "could not load" dialog at start-up, note the message and send it to us with Help & Info › Feedback.

A command opens the activation window

  • No key has been entered yet, or the licence has expired. Paste the key and the command continues.
  • Check the expiry under Revanalyticx › License; About shows the current licence state as well.

Everything shows as No Data

  • Increase the search distance — a poorly registered scan can sit 30–80 mm off the model.
  • Make sure the cloud is linked into the active document and visible in the view (a cloud inside a linked RVT is not analysed).
  • Check the scan actually covers those faces — line of sight matters.

Gridded Inspection will not start

  • It needs one analysed planar face. Run Model vs Point Cloud on the element first, then pick a flat face.

Analysis is slow

  • Lower the sampling density, or run on a selection rather than everything in the view.
  • Hide clouds you are not checking with Show / Hide and use a section box in the view.

Sending us a log

Click Help & Info › Feedback. It opens a message to info@axisbuildbim.com in your own mail program with the product version, your Revit release and the licence state already filled in. Nothing is sent until you send it.

17FAQ

Which Revit versions does Revanalyticx support?

Revanalyticx runs on Autodesk Revit 2022, 2023, 2024, 2025, 2026 on 64-bit Windows 10 or 11. Revit LT does not load add-ins and is not supported.

Do I need Autodesk ReCap to use Revanalyticx?

Only to convert raw scanner files (.e57, .las, .pts, .fls, .zfs) into .rcp/.rcs. Revanalyticx works on any point cloud that is already linked into Revit.

How do I get the plugin?

Access is issued by the AxisBuildBIM team. Fill in the Request access form on the Revanalyticx site and you will receive the installer and a per-seat activation key within one working day.

Is there a free trial?

No. Revanalyticx 4.1 needs an activation key from the first click — until one is entered, the analysis commands open the activation window. Ask us for a key through the Request access form.

What do the heat-map colours mean?

They follow the tolerance bands you set in the Model vs Point Cloud dialog. A negative value means the scan sits inside the modelled surface, a positive one outside, and No Data marks places the scan never covered. Statistics reports the pass rate against the same bands.

Can I move my licence to another computer?

Contact info@axisbuildbim.com with your key and the new machine name. Licences are per seat and are re-checked online periodically, with an offline grace period so site visits without Wi-Fi are fine.

Does it work with worksharing / BIM 360 models?

Yes. Heat maps and probes are view-specific and are not written to the central model. Annotate, Annotate Grid Points, Object Classify and the two name checkers do write to the model - as ordinary Revit elements and parameters that sync like anything else.

Which file formats can I export?

PDF from Export PDF (with CSV and HTML beside it if you turn them on in Options); CSV from Gridded Inspection, Statistics, the Annotations window and Object Classify; Excel from Name Checker and Clash Detection.

Why is the Revanalyticx tab missing from the ribbon?

Usually Revit was open while the installer ran, or the add-in was declined at Revit's first-start prompt. Close Revit, run the installer again, start Revit and choose Always Load. If it still does not appear, use Help & Info › Feedback or email info@axisbuildbim.com.
